Burlington’s soil conditions vary considerably across the city. Properties along the lakeshore and in the older south-end neighbourhoods tend to sit on heavier clay soils that retain moisture and expand with frost, the same conditions that undermine pavement from below if the base was not built deep enough. Properties on the escarpment and in the newer north-end developments have better-draining soils but sit on grades that require careful drainage planning during installation.
